My cat is a Panther. It's in the Place Roi Albert at Houffalize, Belgium; the tank was pulled out of the River Ourthe, where it had fallen in during the Battle of the Bulge.

Believe it or not, I'm appreciably smaller than this picture now. I haven't lost a lot of pounds, but my waist is at least an inch smaller, and I've made even more progress on getting rid of that happily-earned beer gut. I've been at this for over a month and a half now, and it's paying off.

All it takes is between an hour and an hour and a half in the gym, four to six hours a week.

I'll probably still eat the potato doughnuts at the PA Farm Show...

Thanks Tony. Maybe next year I won't be the fatass American huffing and puffing through Europe.

I should note too that I've been working out and dieting for the last month, look a little different than this picture, and hope to look a lot different as soon as I can.

On the way over, in the Pittsburgh airport, by chance I met up with a miniatures gamer who lives about five miles from me. He was going on a tour led by Al Nofi. I can't recommend specific tours, as my itinerary was pretty much picked out by my Dutch friends, two army veterans and a dog when we went to the Bulge. But any excursion led by Al Nofi is probably worth at least considering.

Thanks for that Jim! I'll get myself a guide and see about joining a history tour of some kind.

Also, do see the American memorial south of Bastogne; it's worth the visit, definitely. So are the American cemetery at Hamm and the German one at Sandweiler, both in Luxembourg.

There is a such a great deal to see, and due to time constraints my Dutch friends and I ended up concentrating on a small part of the Bulge.

I would recommend going toward Foy, and looking for the Band of Brothers memorial erected by Tom Hanks and HBO. Go down the road a couple of hundred yards, and enter the woods on the left (assuming that you're coming from Bastogne). You'll find Easy Company's foxholes.

We also went to Wiltz, and saw another set of entrenchments: These belonged to the 26th Volksgrenadier Division.

In both cases you'll have to look hard, and you'll need a good map, but both are well worth the visit. Bastogne is a bit of a tourist town in the Gettysburg/Waterloo vein, and you'll have to go there, but the real battlefield is outside.
