Finally, I get around to my 2014 wrap-up....

Well, better late than never….  A brief wrap up of 2014 gaming.  I have to say that there were quite a few surprises for me last year. The biggest of which was that I enjoy card-based wargames.  I have always avoided these due to a general dislike for card games as a kid growing up in Yosemite N.P., California. (They were the only games that were portable enough to bring with us to the back-country ranger station my father manned.) It all started with Spearpoint 1943 by CEG; it was just to sort of light game I was looking to fill the “30 minutes and under” need.  That led to Down in Flames: Aces High by DVG; I’ve seen this listed at many conventions and it seemed like a good game to learn for those convention “pick-up” games.  That led to finally breaking out Fading Glory, the CDG by VPG/GMT, which I found provided a reasonable solitaire game and didn’t take up too much space on the desk.

The Italians came through for me this year with Adowa.  Rules are not as clear as they could be, but boy is it good fun.

I was sad to hear of the passing of John Hill. I had a chance to meet him once and hear a talk on Manassas/Bull Run. Nice guy and a good friend of Dana Lombardy, whom I know as an active member of the Bay Area gaming scene.  I had been wanting to play Yalu (which I will finally get to do next week) and Kasserine Pass.  It was his Squad Leader design that turned my head (away from miniature wargaming) all those years ago.  I still have that original “purple box’ version of the game.

I’m looking forward to whatever comes along in 2015. I do have La Battaille de France 1940, which I hope to get on the table, soon.  I’m also looking forward to seeing DVG’s Tank commander game, although I wish they would have made it from some other POV rather than a German tiger tank commander.  (What about the Brits, eh?)  I also attending Consimworld Con in Phoenix (for at least three days), and I’ll be running C&C games at Pacificon (SF Bay Area) on Labor Day weekend.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2015, and if we pass at Consimworld Con or Pacificon, please introduce yourself!
