I feel like I'm losing part of my arm with the forum going down. It has become a staple of my life. Well, we hope the upgrade goes well and I thought I'd set-up this blog so folks can share what they will be doing between now and when the forum is back online in a few days (based on our schedule if all goes according to plan). Keep in mind we have the webinar tonight per our news desk announcement, as well as our live chat session tonight that immediately follows it.

Anyone doing gaming now or over the weekend? I may have a chance to play SPI's Operation Star Saturday morning if I can break away prior to my son's 5th birthday party.

... well I am proofing some countersheets (with the aim of doing more proofing after that)... think stages of a rocket I guess(or one of those Russian toys where one is inside another then another then another... ). :)

Actually very similar to the process that you are currently doing in the cyberworld realm in general terms.

For some reason, I think I got the better deal this time :)  (In all seriousness, I wish you mundanity in your work on this - seems like the best thing a upgrade can have)

STATUS UPDATE REPORT: The dbase export has already been completed and the dbase optimization has been completed as well. Dbase size was 8.3 Gig. Optimized dbase is now 3.77 Gig. We are ahead of schedule. We are presently attempting an import of the dbase into the upgraded (latest) version of the forum software. This process is expected to go on for several hours and hopefully it will prove to be a success. Then we have a bunch of steps after that to complete that will take at least another day to complete from our estimates -- if all goes according to plan without experiencing any technical difficulties.

We won't have our first look at how the forum looks and how the import went until that process completes, so there is still a ton to get done.... thanks for your continued patience. At least for now, things are progressing without any red flags. Once the forum is back online and running, that will be our first good look to see how things are progressing (i.e. checking settings, valid file attachments, etc.).

While not overly technical, it has to do with what the 8.33 Gig dbase is going to be going through in terms of being exported/optimized and then imported again into the system, then rebuilding search index, reconfigure work, etc.

So yes, it happens as part of the process. Don't be surprised if this is a
multi-day affair given the size of your DB.

Also from that same email:

"This process will take a long time. How long? Unknown. It is hardware
dependent as much as data dependent. Could be several hours, could be an
entire day. Your browser may well give up waiting of course, so the best
thing to do is just monitor the PID's CPU%, along with an occasional tail
of the export file (expNNN where NNN is some number) until it no longer is
changing."

Just curious: what kind of upgrades are we talking about that necessitates several days of down time? You can get technical with your words :)

I have Devil's Cauldron set up and hope to get another turn in before I head off to NJ/NY for the weekend.  I'm also progressing on some of my own design projects.

Thank you. Which reminds me that I had better line up some games to play...

Sounds like good timing. Have a great time at the convention!

Good luck with the upgrade.

I am attending a small local wargame (only!) convention here in Calgary. It is always a fun time and it allows folks to try some of the multiplayer games they would not normally play.
