Really cool 5-player Warfighter mission with four other people. Everybody got their own player soldier so there was lots of shooting and cardplay. We probably missed a few rules but we were able to complete the Going Deep mission and clean out the enemy HQ.
Finished my first Vassal PBEM game of Bomber Command, one of my favorite GMT games. The Vassal module is really good, allows the RAF player to plot the missions in various colors on the map invisible to the German player. Almost *better* than the cardboard/paper version. The RAF successfully bombed Karlsruhe but an early twilight and a mass of Tame Boar attacks at the end gave the Luftwaffe a big victory.
Finished the last Hoplite scenario - Mantinea. I have enjoyed these battles immensely over the past six months or so, played every scenario in the box at least once. In Mantinea, the Thebans broke the Spartans in three turns. The first clash of phalanxes is above.
Then the finale with the Spartan phalanx broke,
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Two Hoplite scenarios: Coronea - the Spartans break the Thebans in Turn 3 and Leuctra - The Spartan route in three turns. A lot of randomness in these, from the initiative die rolls to the variable movement allowances of the Greek hoplite phalanxes. Played 'em both in a 4 and1/2 hours, including set up for Leuctra. Here's the Big Theban phalanx.
Finished a linked Hornet Leader CAO campaign using the option from Phantom Leader Deluxe. Played short, medium and long scenarios with the same squadron. Wanted to try the F35, so picked the Iran 2014 USMC situation.
Short campaign: Started with 4 Harriers and 4 F35s. Flew five missions, destroyed 4 targets for a "Good" rating.
Medium campaign: Added two Harriers to the squadron. Flew eight missions and destroyed 5 targets for an "Adequate" rating.
Long campaign: Two more Harriers added, so I started the campaign with eight AV8s and four F35s. As we attacked tougher targets further north, things got a little ugly. Started against the nuclear plant #38 and did not destroy it. Really stressed out my pilots. Finally got the nuke plant on day 9. Flew 10 missions, only destroyed 6 targets. Lost four AV8s to ground fire with Beast and Hammer going MIA, costing me -10 VPs. So my result for the long campaign was "Poor".
The F35 stealth fighters are really cool. They can usually fly up next to the target at high altitude and release JDAMs without being detected - but you don't always have the SO points to buy such high-tech weapons (see Thor dropping a GBU-31 on a bridge target above). So the Harriers do a lot of NOE low level approaches and attack with dumb bombs, or pop up over the target and drop GBUs from high. Or they suppress the flak with rockets and Mark 20s for the stealth fighters.
The bombing campaign results were mixed. On the other hand, my little squadron cleared the skies of the Iranian air force. A total of 73 (!) air-to-air kills with Salsa ( Veteran F35) shooting down 12 MiGs. A fun way to start 2015!
