Wrapped up the year with Hornet Leader Taiwan Defense Long Campaign. I randomly selected from aircraft available in 2008. Got 4 FA-18C, 4 FA-18E and 4 FA-18F. Unfortunately the more-capable E and F models cost me 51 SO points so we only had 26 left to start the campaign with.

You start off with target #47 Central Command and #27 Naval Base active, both have bad effects ("improvements") if you don't knock them out.. Had trouble with the Naval Base, so had to buy JDAMs on Day 2 to take out the Railyard #24 that took the Naval Base off the target list.

After Day 2 we were pretty much out of SO points except for the 6 you get every turn. A few night missions helped replenish the SOs, but most attacks after Day 2 were made with iron bombs, AGM-88s and AGM-65s for lack of SO points.

Lost Tonto MIA attacking the ASW Fleet on Day 4 and Boston on Day 10 attacking the Oil target.

Another tough campaign. I think I would select more FA-18Cs to save on SO points next time.  Although I like the more capable Es and Fs. I received 31 VPs for target destruction, but subtract 8 VPs for the two lost Hornets and MIA crews resulted in a 23 VP "Adequate" result. I hope the Taiwanese held out!

A big game of Queen's Gambit with my son, 12. He won't play historical wargames, but will play Star Wars games.

Fehrbellin 1675 in NGBG.  The Danish cavalry looked like it would turn the Swedish left until the Swedish infantry made a desperate counter-attack and trapped a bunch of the Danes against the  impassable marsh.  Wound up a Decisive Swedish victory!

A fun afternoon 4-player game of Warlords of Europe, a Euro-style treatment of strategic medieval war in Europe. Lots of little plastic soldiers, cards, etc. I finished third, as usual.

Nothing Gained But Glory - Malmo night assault scenario. An unusual situation for this series. A close draw/Danish marginal victory.

Over Thanksgiving at my buddy's house in Des Moines:

C&C Ancients - Colline Gate, Baetis River and Pharsalus.  I think I was on the losing side in each one. . .

U-Boat Leader 1939 Short Campaign

I think I bungled a couple of rules, but my first campaign ended as follows:

U-44 - two tankers and a freighter for 26,000T plus a patrolling secort and a trawler.
U-47 - three CL (attack mission) plus a small merchant and a liner (19,000T).
U-20 - a 5,000T freighter and a patrolling escort.
U-23 - a tanker and a freighter (15,000T)
U-56 - a tanker (5,000T).

U-44 limped home with 17 stress points. A 25 VP "good" result.

Hornet Leader: Started the Syria 2004 Long campaign with 2 F14s, 4 FA18Cs, 2 FA18Es, 2 FA18Fs and 2 EA6Bs.The FA18Fs cost two SOs more with the same WP load, but it looked like the F pilots had a little better AtG value. I could be wrong, though.

Syria starts with three targets active with bad Improvements: Central Command #47 (moves campaign marker to the right each day), Minor AF #2 (+1 center bandit to every target) and SCUD Launchers #56 (lose one VP every day). In an interesting twist on the normal target selection rules, these targets really need to be attacked right away. We hit both the SCUDS and Central Command on Day 1.

Campaign went pretty well. Destroyed all the targets and used up my last 5 SOs on Day 10 (the 12th mission). Scored +38 VPs, enough for a "Great" result, but unfortunately lost Ranger and his FA18E MIA on Day 5 which deducts 4 VPs for only a "Good" final rating.

I'm really going to miss the Phoenix missile attacks in 2008!

Nothing Gained But Glory (GMT): A +35 VP marginal Swedish victory.  The Danes were able to break into the Swedish center and capture or disable all the Swedish artillery, but lost too many cavalry units on the wings.

A medium USAF Rolling Thunder Phantom Leader campaign. Scored 17 points, one short of a "Great" result.  Can't seem to get better than "Good". No matter what. Four F4s, four F105s and two Wild Weasels.
