HFC on tour: Visiting Speyer, the 2000-year-old Imperial City!

This July, Andreas and I visited Speyer, a 2000 year old city in Southwestern Germany, founded by the Romans. During the Middle Ages, Speyer was the Imperial City where kings and emperors ruled over Germany.

The city has a rich history, the oldest and largest Romanic church world-wide (which is even an UNESCO world heritage site) with Imperial tombs, and - last but not least - a fantastic Technology Museum with planes (for example the Antonov An-22), several WWII vehicles, helicopters (the "Hind") and the Russian space shuttle Buran.

LOL, you are right, of course. My announcement may be a somewhat simplified introduction to the meaning of Speyer as in Imperial City, but we wrote a (quite touristic) travelogue rather than an essay about complicated politics in the Middle Ages, so the announcement had to be short and simple.

Nevertheless, Speyer definitely was the center of imperial politics during the Middle Ages (at least as long as the Salian emperors were in power...) and became a free imperial city in 1294. Our article contains more information about the Salians and their tombs in the Imperial Cathedral's crypt.

You should visit the city one day, it is certainly worth a trip, especially if you are a history buff!

Well, back then we had itinerant emperors with no proper capital. But to be sure, Speyer, was a much-patronised city by the Salic emperors and kings

Never been there myself.
