On my drive into the office this morning I got to thinking about how much I hear these various phrases in conversation:
To be honest
Honestly
Truthfully
To tell you the truth

and I started wondering if we've declined so much as a society that we now have to advise people when we are making a factual or truthful statement. Have we become so good at lying to one another that it is the rule rather than the exception?
Is it so easy to speak in flasehoods and exaggerations that we have to quantify when we are actually telling each other the truth?

What do you think?

Hello, saw this thread and thought I'd jump in. My hunch is that statements like this have been around for a long, long time--I really wonder if the incidence of their use is increasing? I suspect not, but am not sure. That said, however, if they've been around forever, I think they've often been used much as you suspect--spin, lies, etc... But, it still seems to me that such phrases are just as often used by sincere people to express an honest belief. Just my 2 cents into an interesting conversation. Thanks.

I'm lying now.

My thinking was...if you are saying that, does that mena the other times you aren't telling me the truth?

Absolutely. Not only do people destroy their own integrity, they wreck the credibility of certain terms in the English language. Such as honesty.

People today are becoming increasingly willing to lie. The danger in this behavior is that it degrades trust and creates paranoia.

So Smitty in that instance would you say it had the opposite effect? It prepared you to expect to not hear the full story?
