Vassal demos sell games.
Well, that's the effect they have on me any way. In the Hornet Leader II demo, you get a walkthrough and a playable version of the game? How could I resist? I just had to give it a go.
The Vassal log demo did a great job of demonstrating a game of HLII from start to finish. Afterward, I read the rules to catch the finer points and I was ready to play. I decided to try a single test flight instead of starting a campaign because I knew I would make some mistakes. And I did. I didn't give AtA penalties for my boys with AtG load-outs, and I destroyed a site that I was only supposed to be suppressing (I caught that mistake in time at least).
The mission was simple: Destroy a lightly guarded arms factory. The ground defenses were few and far between, and their range of fire was short. Very short. The bandit count was low, thanks to a little help from some Tomcats. Still, the rookie got shot up (only stressed, actually), and we just barely had enough time and bombs to take out the objective. And, damn, I had a good time of it.
So, tomorrow I'll download the full game, run my boys through a short campaign, and try and remember to take those weight penalties. I would do it now, but it's late. Really late. My thanks to Dan Verssen for another great game and another sleepless night. ;)
