I just posted a new article to Line of Departure Online Features. This one covers one of my personal favorite units of World War II, and one of the most effective of the Pacific War, the United States Army's 77th Infantry Division. Not a traditional elite like the Marines, or a band of hand-picked and specially-trained soldiers such as the paratroopers or Rangers, this division was comprised mainly of reservists and draftees, making it more typical of those raised for the Second World War. Further, when organized, many of its soldiers were older than most. Yet a combination of excellent leadership from the top and extensive training helped raise its performance to that of an elite.
