Today, I uploaded a new article on Line of Departure Online Features. This one is an unusually scholarly piece, expanded from an essay that I had to write for a graduate historiography class I took at American Military University over the winter, while working toward a second Master's in military history. The subject is the Battle of Shiloh and how three leading military historians -- John Keegan, Shelby Foote, and Bruce Catton -- analyzed Ulysses S. Grant's role, particularly in the early stages of the battle, when his army was taken by surprise. Besides comparing and contrasting their portrayals, I check them against the primary sources, including the Official Records.
It's a bit different than what people are used to seeing in either Line of Departure Online Features or the print edition, but it could be a preview of things to come on the web side especially. Not that I intend to give up on wargame content for the site, not by any means, but it is something different, and there could well be more academic work in the future.
