So I feel compelled to say a little something about the weekend of playing OCS we went through recently (6/22-23/12).
First I think this was the sixth or seventh annual June weekend I've done this and, as ever, it was very fun to get several guys together and play multiple days and hours of OCS. It seems like each year has almost had a theme to it too.
One year it was look at the terrain and guard your supply lines as we had a key bridge taken, putting about half our army out of supply.
A couple years back it was "this is how an air campaign is run" as we had quite a bit of air action and we paid a lot of attention to how to use the new fighter sweep rules & etc.
This year I'd say the theme was "how to breach a line or seal it" as we had a lot of back and forth action of the Russians breaching the line and the Germans sealing it back up with their mobile forces. Key lessons learned: the Russians probably need at least a three hex hole while the Germans can probably hold a one hex hole with the big 4 step divisions they have. You then fan infantry divisions out through the hole along either flank and they should really be in combat mode. Then the mobile divisions can go for some deep penetration. Oh also, even if you're 45 or 55, "deep penetration" jokes can still turn you in to Beavis and Butthead. Finally, the way to seal the holes is to pinch it off at the shoulders of the penetration. If you've got the units to do this and your enemy hasn't held those shoulders strongly enough then you almost want a lot of units to pour through (as long as you've got your own backfield garrisoned well enough). Killing them by attrition is a lot easier than by combat.
