Now, it's one thing to have a series of games that stretches on for quite a number of years, such as The Gamers'/MMP's Tactical Combat Series
family of games on the Grossdeutschland. After all, there was GD '40
nearly two decades ago covering the GD infantry regiment at Stonne in May of 1940. Then there was GD '41
at Mtzensk in Russia in 1941 that was published a few years later. For the GD fans, there was quite a long stretch between that and the publication of GD '42
just a couple of years ago in 2009.
But apparently, 2009 was the beginning of an avalanche of titles on this particular unit. In 2010, Grognard Simulations published their first game in the DEATH RIDE series on the southern pincer of Kursk with Death Ride Kursk: Gross Deutschland
, a truly massive tactical game. In 2011, GMT published Chad Jensen's Fighting Formations: Grossdeutschland Motorized Infantry Division
. And now, Decision Games has published the first in their Famous Divisions series within the latest issue of WORLD AT WAR magazine, Famous Divisions: Gross Deutschland Panzer
, a sort of super quad game.
Why is it this unit has attracted so much designer attention as of late? I'm almost afraid for an HASL module or scenario pack on this formation as the next product to jump on the Grossdeutschland bandwagon! What do you think of these games? How well do you think they represent the uniqueness of this particular formation? Who likes playing the opposition to the GD in these games, and why?
