No, this is not a political post, not really.

Tonight, I sat on a panel with six other voters recruited by Trib Total Media, the publisher of the old Pittsburgh Tribune Review and currently the Valley News Dispatch and Greensburg Tribune Review, at the Media Innovation Center of Point Park University in Downtown Pittsburgh.  My perspective wasn't as a professor of political science, but one of a group of typical voters.  One guy was a business owner who voted for Trump, three were strongly for Hillary Clinton, and one was a Bernie Sanders voter who went for Hillary.

Me?  I was none of the above.  I'm now a registered Libertarian who voted for Gary Johnson.  I was also the only professor and the only wargamer.

It was all very spirited but respectful and considerate, including afterwards, when we got together for sandwiches and brownies.  We all had a lot in common, more than what might divide us.  For example, the most progressive guy there, the Bernie Sanders supporter, was a Korean War veteran with a big interest in military history and especially the Civil War.  So naturally we got along just great.

It is amazing how people of widely different political convictions can share perspectives on Ulysses S. Grant and George B. McClellan.  Here we are, more than a hundred and fifty years past the Peninsula and Antietam, and the mere mention of Little Mac drives us nuts.

Voter Town Hall

This story reminds me of my time at Borders Books. I worked with a man that was always critical of the government, the company, and sometimes even the country. What was his favorite holiday? July 4th! He loved America and all it stood for and allowed him to be and do. Sadly too many get polarized by issues and forget the common threads. It is wonderful that in this time of "dispute" you were able to find common ground and enjoy each other's company!
