Support the Band: Heavy Metal in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia produces more than oil and Wahhabism. Much to the terror of its rulers, it produces rock and roll. The Magic Kingdom is certainly a hostile environment, especially as it is plagued by the Islamic religious police, the feared and repressive Mutaween. However, despite the opposition of these thugs without an excuse to live, Saudi rock bands do exist, and the music scene is expanding, reports Fox News. According to Freemuse and Saudi Arabia's own Arab News, rock music, including heavy metal, was a growing, culturally revolutionary force, as early as 2008. Additionally, in April 2009, the Lebanese news site Menasset, identified Jeddah, the historic port of entry for Mecca and Medina, as a particularly active heavy metal center. Hopefully, this and the rest of the Kingdom will grow as a free center of musical expression.

Cool! I was really interested in Wasted Land, and would buy a CD or download in a minute, or see them if they toured. Hence the name of the blog post: Support the Band.

I had a listen to Breeze of the Dying at MySpace music. Actually good stuff.
