Thanks at Thanksgiving.... A gamer to be thankful for...

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Consimworlders...... There is much to be grateful for this year, including good health and a gamut of games that seem to be ever piling up in the closet. And of course, I am ever grateful to Consimworld for hosting this and the other sites.

One of the people I've been thinking about lately is Gary Gygax. I certainly owe him for getting me into the hobby. I know, I know.... " Wait wasn't he the DnD guy?" Yeah, that's him, but back in the day -- before DnD -- he was a a well known historical miniatures player and game designer who wrote a regular column for my favorite magazine (or was it a 'zine?), Panzerfaust. He was known for several sets of historical miniature rules and AH's Alexander the Great board game, as well as others created and published through TSR. He also started The Strategic Review magazine.

Sometime in the late 80s (I think) I ran into him in the dealer's room of a SF Bay Area game convention (Pacificon). He was just another gamer, looking at the games on display, talking to the reps about wargames miniatures. We had a quick conversation (as I was on my way to a game). What a guy, always in love with games and with such enthusiasm that could only be described as "infectious."

When he passed away ABC's This Week ran his "obit" in the first and most important spot on the show, ahead movie and sports stars.... Very fitting.

So thanks, Gary, thanks for the gift of games and the gaming hobby you helped create. And thanks to everyone else out there who in some small (or large) way got this crazy hobby going....

Nicely said, Dave. I still have my copies of Chainmail and Tractics co-written by Gary Gygax. As for him being "the DnD guy" -- that's OK with me; I played plenty of OD&D back in the day. I get a chuckle out of re-reading my old '70s S&T magazines and seeing the scorn they heaped upon the RPG crowd -- that is until they tried to jump on the gravy train with Dragonquest and their Ares magazine. Too little, too late... So cool that you got to meet him in person. And to second your sentiments: Happy Holidays to all here at Consimworld!
