I hate fleas, but that hatred is nothing comared to my hatred of ticks. We took Grant our golden retriever on a hike before the Blue Oyster Cult concert. We came back and pulled over 100 ticks off of him. We are still finding one or two here and there on him - two alone today. Ick!

Once it's inside the foot, it's an itch that cannot be scratched. I don't think flamebroiling one's foot works though. Years ago, someone in my barracks had them on his foot. Well, he suffered greatly.

My dad used to say that ticks could be burned off with a cigarette, or by smearing grease or motor oil on them. Supposedly that's what they learned in basic training in Mississippi in World War II.

I have a fear and hatred of ticks too.

I am quite wary of rotten tree trunks and branches in the jungle. Once, these ticks get into the shoes and on the foot, it's Itch City. No amount of hot water, scratching will remove them.

Only an injection of some sort.

No we got it pretty much under control. Never saw it like that. All little ones - we discovered it when I found one crawling on me on the way home!

Poor dog! I hope he doesn't catch anything nasty from them.
