I was involved in the ASL playtest back in 1984 and can sympathesize with your reaction--we lost 75% of the play testers (and we had just gotten our arms around GI: ANVIL OF VICTORY. While I enjoy ASL and ASLSK, there are a lot of other competitors out there now and I'm not sure that if I was starting all over again whether or not I'd go with that system over other ones.
Also love the simpler games and rarely have time to play these days, unfortunately. At least I live in an area with a lot of wargame opponents, so that's not a problem? We generally play games we can complete in an afternoon. C&C series certainly are fun--I like the Ancients and Napoleonic titles GMT released, but haven't played the others.
