Hi Eric

Thanks for the warm welcome .

Getting more time to enjoy my favorite hobby of wargaming looks like it is something that is likely to happen pretty soon, as I am about the same age as you (based on reading your profile) and I work in the oil & gas industry (in Australia), so getting laid off before the end of the year is pretty much a foregone conclusion.

Not that it bothers me at all as I'm actually looking forward to having a lot more time on my hands to play more games!! :)

The welcome is appreciated. I am just entering wargaming, finishing my transition out of video games.

I teach history in a state university, but my warrant is a large writ so I can cover what I like. The more I teach, the more I see no one knows war history. Wargaming really helps teaching the dynamics of a conflict and explaining causality. At the very least the professors should understand it.

Sekigahara has good reviews and seems popular, it is also a history I teach every year. I will put it on my wish list. Thanks for the recommendation.

Kurosawa does great films, and I am also a fan. One of my occasional classed I get to teach is class on Kurosawa, it is a great time. As in war history, most do not know their film history either.

It is encouraging, that once students learn from a teacher who knows and is invested in the subject matter, they find the value in it too.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for the welcome. Its good to meet an old ASL grognard. My special ASL focus is Japanese paradrops at night. Admittedly a thin oeuvre. Actually, I am trying to resurrect my playing. I recently finished clipping all my counters FINALLY. I am now looking into VASL while my local club is closed. I hope to run across the consimmers on-line soon

I picked up the SCS title this week and have been pouring through the rules. It looks attractive and once I get used to the chit draw method, I am impressed with the quality and have been interested in the battles sign the old Sowchows 79 SL days.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I have been dabbling outside of my comfort zone of the standard Hex Counter games, specifically my typical goto - Operational Wargames.

I used to go to Game Towne as a young man in the mid-late 90s and into the early 2000s...Even had a chance to go visit before it closed! That place was phenomenal.

San Diego is a great place, fortunately I am not too far away so I have the opportunity to attend the SD Hist Convention, hosted by Harold Buchanan. A very fun event.

Keep in touch. If you ever need a vassal opponent, ping me.

Best,

Btac/Tom

Hi Eric. Thanks for the comments. I started gaming in 1967 when my cousin Dave introduced me to the AH games from back then. Been gaming on and off since but really have gotten back into it since 2016 when I retired and am enjoying it to the max. I really like the chit pull games also since things never go the same way each game and new decisions must be made each game. Playing A Victory Lost right now. Have play Poland Defiant and like it a lot. Another one I enjoy playing is Longstreet Attacks. This past December I think it was the only game I had on the table. Kept replaying it. I get on CONSIMWORLD every so often to see whats new. My cousin Dave is a member here also. Take care during these trying times. Lots of time for gaming with all these restrictions but I for one am ready to get back to some kind of normality.   All the Best.  Bob

Many thanks, Eric.  Very kind of you.  I'm definitely looking forward to perusing the site.  A long time ConsimWorld follower, but now that I have a little extra time for gaming, I thought it was time to actually get on the forum.  Always fun to pull off an oldy but a goody from the shelf and PAA definitely fits the bill.  I'm really enjoying it.  Hope you have a blast with OST III, a friend and I are looking to get there soon working our way through I and II via PBEM.  Best regards.  -Alex

I love the OCS system.  Planning to spread out Beyond the Rhine when I make the space to add gaming table.  I haven't played CSS yet, so waiting with great anticipation for Fulda Gap to arrive.

Thanks for the Welcome Eric!   I needs some more plays with CoH 3rd edition, but it feel like there is a lot more die rolling for all of those spent checks!  So many games, so little time.   As far as ASL goes, I'm considering that a longer term learning process, having played several of the Starter kit scenarios, I'd like to graduate to full ASL as time allows.

Thanks, Eric! I've been absolutely transfixed by ToC since the first edition, and the second is a huge improvement. If you want to play it on Vassal, let me know.

There are seven impulses/sub-impulses (each one of which one could suppose are a day long) per TWW turns which are one week long.  Each Fleet hex accommodates three TWW hexes very closely.  About all I really change are the Fleet zones which are made symmetrical instead of irregularly shaped and which are then identical to the various theaters (Balkan et cetera) in TWW.  They are 32 TWW hexes in diameter.  So new maps are necessary, unless one would take a set of pencil crayons to the old maps.  The neat trick I realized in a moment of inspiration was to center the Fleet hexes on every second TWW hex.  I'll post up some images of this in a week or so.

Eric, I'm getting to the point where I have to force myself to not gallop after all the new and interesting games pouring into the market. Besides approaching the limits of storage I just don't have the time to invest in games, particularly those with an unfamiliar system. And of course there is the issue of what the local group wants to play. (Vassal sometimes works out well but sometimes not so much.)  After 6 decades of gaming I need to grow up and show some discipline, difficult as that will be. To paraphrase what I think is correctly attributed to Frederick the Great, "Who wants to play everything will play nothing very well".

Thanks Eric! I wish I had found this site sooner. I will definitely post my thoughts, in fact I'm up early today to work through more of the scenario book!

I should mention that I had to play these monster games by myself. Sigh. Not much has changed since my teens except now my wife and kids look at me funny when I go down to the basement to play with 'my games'.
