About Me
I am a digital fx artist working in Hollywood, though I almost never feel like an actual artist at my day job. I only ever feel like an artist when working on my wargame graphics projects, largely because I am in complete control of both the process and the outcome. I discovered many years ago that my love for wargames is really more a love for wargame graphics (and design), rather than a love of playing them. That is why about 50% of my collection I consider to be research materials moreso than games to be played.
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
I am a sci-fi, fantasy, superhero nut, especially when it comes to movies and games. I am fascinated by comic books, but rarely buy or read them; like wargames, I am interested mostly from an artist's perspective. I am consumed by a desire to be an artist after two decades of living the life of an engineer (software engineer, to be exact).

Hard work paid off

Fondling Oscar

One reason why I've been out of touch for a while (especially towards the end of last year) was that I was hard at work on the visual effects for a movie called The Curious Cast of Benjamin Button. The company that I work for, Digital Domain, was responsible for creating the completely digital, aged heads of Benjamin that you see during the entire first hour of the film. It was challenging, ground-breaking work, and last weekend it all…

Open Warfare (WIP report 1)

Click on the image below to see a larger version of the scenario sheet.

The original working title for this game system was Ages of War, but since my plan is to make it my entry for the Open Wargame Initiative, I am thinking of calling it Open Warfare instead. Nevertheless, the notion of representing warfare through four distinct technological ages… Continue

Open Wargaming Initiative

I have been reluctant to post about this until I had some solid game design work completed for this project, but since I have no idea how long that will take, I figured I would at least throw this teaser out there.

So what is the Open Wargaming Initiative? Well, imagine a wargame system designed from the start to be open-ended and extensible. But more importantly, a wargame system that nobody "owns", or rather, we all own it together. Like Linux, the system and all its materials… Continue

What's my Special Purpose?

As anyone who has seen Avenue Q knows, having a Special Purpose is important in life. I know cuz the muppets said so. ;-) But what's mine? Well, I realized that the one thing I have that I can share with others on CSW is my love for making wargames. I don't mean designing them (which I'm not terribly good at), I mean making them...creating the physical product, right from one's living room.

That's why I embarked on the whole Ellison die-cutter oddessey almost two years… Continue

My first blog...ever

Confession time: I've never had a blog.

I've had my own website for over ten years, but I've never blogged. In fact, I didn't realize until a few months ago that CSW had member blogs. I'm really that blog-unaware. In general, I think this come from not having much to say to the world at large. But I have found over the last few years that I actually have quite a bit to say to the wargaming community.

The question is, who is gonna read my rantings? Who is gonna… Continue
