Alan Sutton commented on Mark Tomlinson's blog post The Russian Campaign
"The Russian Campaign is very exciting old fashioned fare, when gaming was important and simulation was less so. It actually simulates well and is a very tense and compulsive game. What more could you want? Not dated at all in my opinion."

"Its not that different.  The biggest changes is to the victory conditions.  In the older version it was likely that between two players of similar abilities you would end in a draw.  In the newest rules, a draw is not…"

"> I am wondering whether I am just too old fashioned and behind the times and maybe I should give CDGs a better chance. The few CDGs I've tried make me feel like I'm playing Go with cards, not what I look for in a wargame."

Mark Tomlinson commented on Mark Tomlinson's blog post The Russian Campaign
"Yes. I found the sparsity of counters rather ironic for a 'front' game. I also found it annoying that the opponent could play cards that essentially made decisions about what Hitler or Stalin would do and when. I don't mind random…"

The Russian Campaign

I just picked up a copy of this old favourite of mine on ebay for £16. I'm hoping it will be as good as I remember in the 1980s when I last played it. I tried No Retreat! The Russian Front recently and was seriously underwhelmed by it. I don't think I like the card driven aspect of the game. What do others think of TRC and its ancestors?See More

This is not enough to satisfy my craving, hence my search for other wargaming partners. Birmingham seems to be a wargaming desert - or maybe the local wargamers and so well entrenched that they are difficult to spot!
