Profile

Your introduction to consim gaming:
I played boardgames as a youngster and teenager (I remember a Civil War game with little plastic pieces that a friend of mine and I tried to puzzle out), but I wasn't really exposed until I met my husband in college. He was "Emperor" of his gaming club. Eventually, we ended up publishing some games (as Engelmann Military Simulations), and I went to a few gaming conventions (Atlanticon, Origins). I only gamed when he was around until he introduced me to my first AvalonCon. Since then, I've become more fanatical than he is--and regularly abandon him to game on my own. (I'm Assistant Convention Director at the World Boardgaming Championships.) I'm branching out into more wargames, but I'm pretty much open to any game.
Your favorite game(s):
Here I Stand, 7 Ages, Chariot Lords, Struggle of Empires, Sword of Rome, Twilight Struggle, Blue Max, Trireme, Gangsters, Circus Maximus, Crisis: Columbia, Rise and Fall, Shattered States, Puerto Rico, Robo Rally,

Hello Kaarin,

I'm trying to get a room at Lancaster Host for the upcoming WBC in Aug '08, but I was told it is full for that week. Now I'm hoping to find someone who has reserved a room but intends to cancel. Where do you think is the best place (website) to post a note on this?

Thanks for any info,
-Sam

Thanks! I think I chose well, too. When she had her Bat Mitzvah, her parents told her they could take a trip anywhere she wanted. Her choice? A Civil War battlefield tour. When she told me that story, I knew she was the one for me!

It doesn't appear that I posted the link to my Greece photos here. So far I have Thermopylae and Chania photos up on Flickr. The link is http://www.flickr.com/photos/14953024@N06/collections/72157604705139245/. I enjoyed the War Museum, but I visited that a couple of years ago. We had the chance to talk with some soldiers who were also visiting. I didn't even remember that it had that name :)

By the way, Rob, congratulations on your marriage! You must have picked the right woman if she went to the War Museum with you.

Hey Kaarin, I just got home from Greece last week too. We must have been in Athens at almost the same time. Looks like you already saw my photos in the Air Assault on Crete folder.

How did you like the War Museum in Athens? We spent one morning there although I didn't take any pictures. I remember thinking that a better name for it would be The Greek Museum of British and French Arms Exports.

funny answer, miss karen

Euro is indeed very strong these days, a good thing for my come back to wargaming : my game collection has increased consequently...(i'm especially addicted to the card-drven genra for now)
it is a far better deal to by directly from the publisher, or consimers than from french brick & mortar stores (not many are sell wargames anyway)
as an example, Here I Stand, GMT, 2006, retails here for ....79 euros !!!

i'd definetly love to go to the WBC and meet great people (don, rick, ed...) : i wish i could next year (i'm just a proud new daddy, for the second time) and i'm likely to spend my summer in diapers

i can see you're a "pro" at Here I Stand : i purchased the game and i'm a little bit scared by the rules. Is the 2 players variant published in C3I a better gateway to learn this one ?

thanks

I just got home--after Greece and then a business trip. I should be able to get them up today.
