Profile

Your introduction to consim gaming:
My first game was Avalon Hill's 1914, of all the introductions, bought as an eleventh birthday present by my grandparents. It took about two years for me to make total sense of that game, but it was the start of my lifelong hobby, one that is close to a vocation.
Your favorite game(s):
The Great Battles of History Series (GMT)
Britain Stands Alone (GMT); Of course, I'm the designer.
Inchon (Command); I'm the designer, again.
1914 (Avalon Hill)
Stellar Conquest (Avalon Hill)
Kharkov (SPI)
The Great War at Sea Series (Avalanche Press)
The Royal Navy (Quarterdeck)
The Chaco War (Command)
Thunder at the Crossroads (The Gamers)
The Siege of Jerusalem (Avalon Hill)

And a whole lot more...
What game(s) are you currently playing (solitaire, FTF, PBEM, etc.) or wish to play next?
Paukenschlag, from Against the Odds.
What game(s) have you played recently?
I just finished playing the hell out of Larry Bond's Harpoon - Commander's Edition for the computer. Harpoon is a classic that never gets old!
In general, how much time do you spend gaming?
Including on the computer, at least ten hours per week.
How big is your game collection?
1000+
About Me
One of the things that might surprise a lot of people is that I'm an incurable workaholic. I don't think that it's a coincidence that the words "worthless" and "workless" are nearly identical. Between a day job, Line of Departure, work for game companies, and other pursuits, my record is having five gigs at once.

And I survived. I think. Maybe.
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
If you want to know more about my tastes in travel, look at the pictures section of my profile. If you want to know about my tastes in music, look at the videos and the music play list.

May Justice Be Done

I just saw the word that one of the worst men on the face of the planet, Radovan Karadzic, was just arrested. For those with short memories, he was one of the most shameless perpetrators of genocide in my lifetime; as President of the Republika Srbska, he officiated over the Bosnian Serbs' policies of ethnic cleansing against their Croatian, but especially Moslem, neighbors. In the most infamous incident in 1995, the Serb forces… Continue

Happy Independence Day

If you're an American, happy Independence Day. If you're not, then this is still a good day to celebrate freedom, liberty, and even healthy defiance. You can't have the two former without the latter on occasion, whether it's telling telling some petty manager or bureaucrat or manager to go tapdance on a landmine, or taking up arms against an oppressor. Standing up for yourself is a prerequisite of freedom, and going along and getting along all the time makes one a subject. This is one of those… Continue

Line of Departure Issue 62 Is Now Available

The sixty-second issue of Line of Departure magazine is ready to start going out the door. The lead review is of Manila '45 from Strategy & Tactics, and there's an in-depth analysis of SPI's monster The Next War. Also, I cover British strategy in Paul Rohrbaugh's downloadable game A Master Stroke, and present the first u-boats of the reborn kriegsmarine, for Avalon Hill's Submarine. The latter comes with free, downloadable counters of each and every… Continue

Submarine, in the Next Line of Departure

Tentatively, I've reserved a space in the next issue of Line of Departure for a feature on Avalon Hill's Submarine game. I definitely owe the readers a game supplement, and Submarine lends itself well to that kind of project, just as much as scenario design. This name of the article that I'm finishing now is "The Reich's First U-Boats," and it starts with brief historical background on the first two classes of u… Continue

Military History and Business

As I've mentioned in other venues, the current state of the American economy is going south, and it's claiming some business ventures. One of them is the insurance career that I began seven months ago, with extremely high hopes and enormous confidence. Now I'm looking for new opportunities. One of the things to which I keep returning is that nearly forty years in wargaming, with a lifelong interest and education in military history, has to amount to something of value to business. On top of tha… Continue

Jim, glad you liked the Opeth album. You should check out their album that came out before "Watershed" too -- "Ghost Reveries". "Damnation" is also excellent if you enjoy their 'softer side'.

I've been enjoying your playlist as well. Good to see "Bastille Day" on there as I've been on a big Rush kick of late. Also enjoying your photos; I made my first trip to Gettysburg and Antietam just this past April.

Jim,

After listening to some of the tunes you have posted there you've made it into my top 3 people to have a listening party with. Excellent playlist you old rocker you.

Hi Jim,

I posted a playtest set of rules, cards and map for 1989 on my blog page. Take a look and tell me what you think and if it would work for your course. I will be doing some playtests and revisions for the next few months so any ideas you have for the game would be great. Thanks.

Ted

Thank you! The site has been very neglected for a long time I am afraid.

Jim, I just wanted to let you know that I'm really enjoying your playlist. I've long suspected that we have a lot of similar music interests, and this confirms it (I'm going to see UFO live in Coeur d'Alene, ID tonight! -- the first time I've seen them perform since 1977[!]). I especially like that way this site allows you to open the playlist up in a pop up window so that I can listen while I'm working away.

Cheers to you; one of the hardest working men in wargaming today.

Heya Jim, glad you liked "The Lotus Eater". I'm going to see Opeth live in Spokane tonight! That song is off their forthcoming "Watershed" CD that is due out in June.

Hi Jim, thanks for the add. Nice playlist by the way. I gotta make one of those for myself.

Sorry, to answer your question more fully I should have mentioned that no, I haven't really used the internet at all except that most of the work I work on now are sent via email rather than unwieldy and heavy parcels.

Hi Jim. You left a query about freelance work and marketing. It's the bit I thought I'd hate but I now quite enjoy writing letters saying how unbelievably wonderful I am.

Actually it's not quite like that. In my sphere it's areas of expertise which get you work. Because of my training in history and law, and my experience as an amateur ornithologist, I simply write to publishers and say, in effect, I know lots about these three specialist areas and I have a reputation as a reliable, efficient and accurate editor. Most of my work comes from one publisher in particular (Oxford University Press). I go out of my way to cultivate a friendly and easy-going relationship with the commissioning editors there since people are more likely to use you if they like you. I'm never false with them but, subject to getting the job done efficiently, I'm relatively informal and chatty with them.

When I started as a freelancer I simply wrote to all the publishers I could think of and said 'here I am', emphasising the specialist knowledge (i.e. the thing which might separate me from much of the rest). I only expected, and got, a few replies but I've not starved since!
Good luck.
