Your introduction to consim gaming:
h, my introduction to CONSIM Gaming... such memories.

My dad had a small vomitorium franchise in South Jersey back in the early 70s. I used to pick up extra tips working as feather-and-bucket boy, scuttling back and forth between the booths of our more energetic customers. Like most CONSIM gamers, I had an early passion for toy soldiers and pretty uniforms. One very busy evening, I was startled to see that two of our customers were sharing a booth (this was back in the days before the Bulemialand chain bought up all the independent operators, so our store had larger facilities than what you all are proabably used to these days). Curiously, the two gentlemen in question had a stunning array of toy soldiers (Airfix Napoleonics) out on their staging table, and were moving them around and rolling dice.

This made a big impression on my childlike mind, and I asked them what they were doing. They encouraged me to join in, and I even managed a corps command reasonably compently by the end of the evening. Thus began a lifelong interest in miniatures wargaming, which blossomed into boardgaming as my funds (and time) contracted later in life.

My first boardgame (real wargame) was SPI's Napoleon at Waterloo. My first boardgame PURCHASE was AH's SQUAD LEADER, an excellent introduction to the hobby. If you can figure SL out, you can figure anything out.
Your favorite game(s):
Squad Leader, 1960: Making of a President, Twilight War, Swords and Sorcery, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, Combat Commander, GBOH, GBACW, Illuminati, Cosmic Encounters, DUNE, Plague, Car Wars (old style), Olympica, Up Front,

Israeli War of Independence: first play

Israeli War of Independence I received a nice package from Victory Point Games over the weekend. I Say, Holmes! (an UNO-like game of mystery solving) and a solitaire game, Israeli War of Independence. I set up and played the Israeli game four times. Basically, you are Israel, fending off the armies of wimpy Lebanon, decent Egypt, Syria and Iraq, and badass Jordan, who are all steadily approaching the Victory Square, which is West Jerusalem. Your actions as a defend… Continue

Podcasts..

I review history podcasts on this social site.. but CONTACT WITH THE ENEMY really is a gamer's podcast. So I'll mention it here. I'm impressed.. The fellers putting this one together admit they aren't expert, and even don't particularly play games well. The sound quality is less than par, but it didn't put me off at all. Add to that the first three episodes were on games that I either own or am intensely interested in getting, and I think these boys have a winner. Ep 1: Hannibal Rome Vs. Cart… Continue

Arthur C. Clarke passes away

I note with sorrow the passing of Sir Arthur C. Clarke, noted Science Fiction author and futurist. Perhaps best known as the author of SENTINEL, the story that became 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, Clarke also wrote two of my favorite SF works, RENDEVOUS WITH RAMA an… Continue

John Adams.. excellent faire..

If I may wax enthusiastic to a pack of fellow history buffs for a moment, I have recently watched the first episodes of JOHN ADAMS on Home Box Office (on cable, for my overseas friends). I am, as some of you know, a reader and fan of history. I was greatly pleased with the production of David McCullogh's excellent 2001 biography of Adams. John Adams is something of the forgotten m… Continue

633 Squadron was a very underrated movie. The music is spectacular and the final attack down the fjord on the heavy water installation inspired Lucas's Star War's assault on the Death Star.

Yes (to a company-level ACW tactical game). The title is CRUCIBLE OF COURAGE and it is on the MMP version of P500 . . . if you go to their website you can see the info on it. Only needs a few more votes to pass the line.

ACW will contain 4 maps . . . it will have many one-turn scenarios (a season) that use only one of the maps, but the giant full campaign game will use all 4. Hopefully, something for everybody.
