I played BKN via Genie about a billion years ago. Anyone else?

I think I have a dot-matrix printer in the attic somewhere.

I came across some old printouts from my GEnie days cleaning out a corner of the game room last week. Good-ol dot matrix...

This is really sad. Let's see - 20 to 25 years. So, this would be like guys in 1975, saying, "Yeah, this 'Rockford Files' detective guy is OK, and yeah, the color on this big screen TV is nice. But I really liked Gerald Mohr in 'The Adventures of Philip Marlowe' - you know, on radio. NOT the TV version. Now THAT was entertainment!!"

You just really can't compare. But you do know, without GEnie, many of us might not know each other. And since the first Avaloncon felt like a GEnie party, I often wonder if ....

I guess what I was really trying to say was, 'you are certainly right' - but many of us didn't have the 'front end box. We'd started before it existed, and we were tapping in (at 300 baud - woo hoo!) with command line prompts!

but it is funn how the two or three key strokes got you where you could SEE EVERYTHING new in one or two 'enter' commands!
Let's see....

Well, that's all true, Jim, - but that was judged by Internet stanards - which even by 1995 were advanced compared to the command line service that GEnie started with. Those of us that came to GEnie in the mid-1980s could only compare it to Compuserve, or something like that. And GEnie had some nice features back then. Heck, I don't think a windows version even existed until a few years before the eventual demise.

For the all the nostalgia about GEnie, there are a couple of things that I don't miss. The first is the crappy front-end software. The DOS package was pretty horrible, even for its time, and the Windows version never seemed to work right for me.

Secondly, how many people left the service the day that GE transferred ownership to the new regime? I did, and it was hard to get through to an operator that night, due to all the customers who were quitting.
