Ditching the Family.....
They keep "pulling me back in"!
God alone knows why, but they seem to want me around...
.....and unfortunately keep me busy with house, finances, relatives, and the Joy of raising a teenager (now), everything but wargaming history. My son has dabbled a bit, but I can not seem to develop any more extensive interest.
If I could, I would, that's for sure , LOL
I still remember the "Classic 500's" at Origins back in the day, I never got past the first round in 83 and 84. Too many way better players than me at those games ,and they had rules that would be nowadays considered pre - school games, LOL.
I enjoy the intricacies of the VG rules, most of all. I have been nose in book now for over a month on Vietnam, 65-75; wanting to go the distance in a Campaign, not sure if either side has it easy in this one. Seems like a tough job for both sides.
Does anyone know of any Series Replays style articles around anywhere on the interweb or or via the Wayback machine that offer examples of play?
Re: Getting Paid to Play Games - nice plan, Jon. Let us know how that works out.
@ Mitchell,
Getting paid to play games is easy:
1. Ditch the wife and family
2. Quit the job
3. Enter every game tourney worldwide
4. Win them all and collect the prizes and "wood"
5. Sell all those on Fleabay for a profit in order to fund both your future tourneys and your travel and your life
:-)
and you can become the world's first "professional" wargamer!!!
@Mark, I read your articles with much interest, thank you very much! I am happy also to have finally located still readable copies of the 2 VG Insider issues with articles on the VN 65-75 game.
I use VASSAL and Skype extensively, as I live in a Park model now ( you can google these, think 1 bedroom apt size). so space is a premium. Pros I've already listed, playing anywhere, anytime, any number of different games one after the other. the largest cons I've found are:
1 changing VASSAL Engine software can make the .vmod you are using inoperative, requiring a new D/L of a working .vmod file ( these are , however, open source freeware).
2. Not being able to see the entire map without zooming out and losing detail can make "forgetting" about a unit in a faraway corner very possible.
3. that game you find and buy sits on a shelf except for the rules and charts, collecting dust.
I've never seen VG's Korean War in person, but heard good things from it. I did play Mosby's a few times a long time ago.
It's been about 2 years since my last Vietnam campaign game, so I'm starting to have the urge to get it back on the table.
Mitch, right now my "big game" table is occupied by your game, "Next War: Korea", which I'm enjoying a lot.
I think that Vietnam may be next game after I've had my fill of NW:K.
Jon, I've tried a few games on Vassal, specifically "Labyrinth" and "Korean War" (VG) and somewhat enjoyed playing them that way. But for some reason I just can't warm up to the idea of playing Vietnam on Vassal. But maybe one day I'll give it a shot.
A few articles I wrote, if you're interested:

I re- acquired Vietnam 65-75 as I recalled greatly enjoying this title. IIRC, it released at roughly the same time as TAHGC's Firepower, and the two together gave one a full concept view of Vietnam conflict, from the grand strategical decisions to the operational tactics to the man to man in the field combat environment all being simulated .
I agree VG did some wonderful titles. I have really just now begun examining the creation that is Pacific War. It seems to contain the level of detail and complexity one found in Gary Grigsby's Pacific War DOS Game title of the same name. I also really enjoy Tokyo Express. and of course Hell's Highway.
My game time isn't as much as it used to be, but on the upside, with VASSAL modules for all of these games now, I don't need to have table time or space for playing and enjoying them. I can play them thanks to virtual desktop link apps for iOS and Android JellyBean 4.1 and later through even my Nexus 7 Tablet while in the airport; in a hotel room ; on a train; in the Lunch Room having my lunch break. it is really very nice ( my Samsung Galaxy IIIs Windows phone can also link into my desktop via virtual desktop software, but the screen is still only 4.3 inches, makes it difficult to picture an entire map even in VASSAL.
And of course, my Chrome Book and my desktop at home, so I can play and enjoy them at 10:30-11:00pm after news and before bed, save it and do that as many nights a week as I prefer.
I do recommend, having used VASSAL engines, VASSAL server FTF play via Skype connextions; and PBEM for many , many wargames; that you use a standard text file to keep some ref notes of what you were thinking when you walk away from the game, so that when you come back to it, you can refresh your memory of where you were at.
BTW I am at PST ( GMT -8:00) if anyone ever desires to try any of these via VASSAL / Skype - e mail me at witchbottles (at) gmail (dot) com ; my wargaming e-addy.
I at one time had everything published on the paragraph / solitaire system both ETO and PTO, and loved them as a good representation for solitaire play.
Ambush / Move Out / Purple Heart / Silver Star / Leatherneck /whatever they called that expansion, etc.
Those did not survive to this day however, and I'll likely not replace them now. I have too much interest in more intricate games at the moment.
I just re- acquired a copy of VG's Vietnam 65-75. I am a long time player and fan of Hell's Highway.
I was a huge fan of this company, and still own a lot of their games.
