I found VG's Pacific War to be a wonderful overall but somewhat complex simulation of the theatre and its many intricacies. I also enjoy Vg's Tokyo Express,  as a representation of the naval fighting in the Solomons in 1942.

I owned 3W's East Wind Rain at one time, it seemed quite complex but rather simplistic in its countermix, making it difficult to follow along the rules. As far as complete battle simulations go, TAHGC's Flattop still ranks among the best overall for me.

I play VITP  regularly, it is a quick paced strategic level game with many items abstracted to give one the feel of the overall ebb and flow of the theatre at large. I have never played the add on to A3R, Rising sun; but understand it follows a similar vein, strategic level operations focused around the economic ability and cost of war.

Vlad, I have not played the World at War Solomons Campaign yet but want to. I played the SPI version once but did not get far in the game. I do like the premise of the design. Cactus Air Force might enter my inventory.

I've been reading the "Green Books" and am in the Marianas. I really would like to see a wargame system that can give you the strategic look and the tactical battles when you pick an island to invade.

Hi Skip,

That picture you see on the previous post is Mark (in green shirt) and a visitor from New Zealand (can't remember his name, sorry).  They were playing Salvo!  I must have been the one taking the picture and I assure you that I'm much younger and handsomer! hehe :-)

I'll check out that game you suggested.  Have you played the new version that was published in the World at War magazine?  What did you think of it if you have played it?

The Solomons is an interestign campaign for me since it involved land sea and air.  A game that has caught my interest recently is the new pre-order game from GMT - Cactus Airforce.

Mark and I played Campaign for Guadalcanal (3W) last year.  Its a nice simple game where you can play the land battle and naval battle together or separately.  For the full Pacific theater campaign, we liked Across the Pacific.  I like that the game has rules for forming your own task forces and task groups.

I intend learning Empire of the Sun but need a tutor.

Vlad, get Decision Game's Solomon's Campaign. It is a remake from an SPI game. Very strategic view.

Vlad, are you two in the shopping mall playing?

I'm also generally trying to beef up my knowledge on the Pacific War with a combination of books and games.  Before diving into the wargame hobby, I've never heard of these islands before or what happened or why a battle occured there.

Do you have any favorite games on the Solomons/New Guinea campaign?

Any of you guys interested or played the latest World at War issue with Pacific Battles:  Guadalcanal?

Mark and I played Campaigns for Guadalcanal: Long Lance and Henderson Field.  In my opinion, its a good game on the battle that has some chrome (Banzai charges, low artillery ammunition, hidden units, disregard ZOCs in the jungle) with medium to low complexity on the rules.  Its also nice how you can play out the naval battle and see its effect on the land battle (or roll a die on a naval chart for to simply get a naval result if you're just focusing on the land battle).
