The learning curve on GTS

I feel like the learning curve on the GTS system is huge.

.

Through many hours of gameplay I've now worked through seven scenarios [the first Learning scenario, then the six Introductory scenario], and am onto my first Intermediate-level scenario, and I still feel like I'm wrapping my head around many of the rules, and making the occasional…

Line of Departure and Coronavirus

Hi Folks,

Work continues on the next Line of Departure. Right now, I'm working on an analysis of SPI's Great Battles of the American Civil War game on the Battle of Monocacy, Drive on Washington. This will be joining reviews of Jack Greene's Togo, from the final tranche of Turning Point Simulations titles, The Day of Waterloo.

The elephant in the room of course is COVID-19. As someone approaching the literal drop dead age, and with a couple of preexisting medical conditions, I am…

Group Play WW3

Global Conflict WW3Global Conflict WW3

You are invited.

This new game concept depicts a modern global war ( 1989-> ) using existing board games on the topic and melding them into a large, multi-player effort for those who own at least one of the games we will use to battle forward.

Play will be handled by email and Vassal for those who wish that form. Email is the method for communication with me and among players outside of specific game…

A Review of Embedding Hexagonal Cells in the Circular and Hexagonal Region of Interest

TWW(GDW) and Fleet Series Mashup

Argghhhhh, I just crashed the comment generator and lost all the text. I will start again. I will write it in Word and paste here.

Further to what I already posted, I don’t believe there is anything much needed for additional rules, the only interaction between the two systems are the political rules and rules about naval movement of supply and land units.

I’ll look up some info on the ships mentioned in the Fleet games.   I don’t know yet if many of the Soviet ships in the…

End of 2019, Start of 2020

I have some Line of Departure news. As you might have noticed, I published an issue in the spring, and have been working on the next one ever since. Issue 83 is a work in active progress, and currently I'm working on a second review for it, this one on Jack W Greene's Togo. The one on The Day of Waterloo, from Against the Odds, is already done and ready to insert.

2018 was a terrible year for a lot of reasons, including and especially getting anything done on Line of Departure.…

COIN system

Just discovered the joys of the COIN system games from GMT stable.

Ran shy of these as did not seem to be 'proper' wargames and the fact that they were generally 4 player but after acquiring Fire In The Lake, and being pleasantly surprised that they generate a good 2 player experience, I am now a firm believer (cue Monkees song) having not been this enthused by a game system/series since Combat Commander !

What a heady mix  of combat, politics, resource management, events,…

Bagration June 27

I got through the June 27 Operations Phase and 11th Guards Army's 2nd Guards Tank Corps, and 5th Guards Tank Army was exploiting beyond the Drut River and historically ran head long into the arriving 5th Panzer Division with the 505th Heavy Panzer Battalion between Berezino and Krupki.

News, and It's Not Good

I have some news for Line of Departure subscribers especially. Unfortunately it's not good. Today I got a bad diagnosis at a doctor's office, and my driving will be curtailed for the foreseeable future. No, it's not a DUI, nor is it connected with substance abuse. It's my heart, and it's been malfunctioning in a frightening manner. I have to get on the schedule with my invasive cardiologist, yes that's a…

End of June 22nd, 1944

And at the end of June 22nd, only 2nd and 3rd Belorussian Front attacked (1st Belo presence felt on the 23rd). Here is the first and only breakthrough made in the 49th Army area of operations. The Germans made local counter attacks and a successful barrage (78th Sturm Division's Nebelwerfer unit)…
