Totensonntag - A Beginner's View

Getting Started: This is a quick and easy game to get into and to play. The rulebook is short - eight pages total: five plages of actual rules, one page of set-up instructions - and it has a nice look to it. The rules were clearly presented and referencing them during play was easy. I have only played through the game once (in two after-work sessions) and I am looking forward to trying it again.

What Happened: I took my eye off the prize. I let my British and South… Continue

Soviet reinforcements mass in Fulda Gap; Berlin defenders destroyed

FRANKFORT--A Soviet-led Warsaw Pact attack on West German and Berlin continued yesterday, with Soviets massing reinforcements around Fulda, while expanding their gains in other sectors.

In Berlin, the French, British and American forces stationed to defend that city have been all but wiped out, cut down in a huge artillary barrage accompanied by attacks from both East German and Soviet divisions, backed by helicoptor… Continue

Avalon Hill's Speed Circuit

Anyone still playing this classic? I know it's a bit outdated but it is still fun to play if you don't have a lot of time. And if you are still playing - does anyone know where I can get better looking cars to replace the plastic ones that came with the game? Has anyone created their own cars and used them?

A few years ago I did work up counters to replace the the plastic pieces but halted the project because I could not find a good page with top down view of the cars on which to… Continue

Currently playing

I am just in the middle of a very busy work period so my playing time is reduced to a minimum. Nevertheless, I am still able to snatch some time to keep playing... I will die with a counter in my hand... that's my doom and I have assumed it :-)

I am currently playing World in Flames. It's my third experience with this game and my second as the German player, so don't expect much from my limited proficiency as the "1000-year Reich" leader :-P

As a global opinion, I am… Continue

The first entry

So I take the plunge into CSW social!

It looks like a Facebook / Youtube interface type thingy. I've never really visited those types of sites often but guess this is the general idea of it.

Amazingly it's quite simple to do things. I was surprised. And this bodes well for my future projects having just bought two web domains which I need to figure out and setup, this should help me out a little with the whole CMS setup type stuff later.

Im not very learned in the computer… Continue

Latest Gaming: Red Star Rising

Played the start scenario of Red Star Rising with one of my local opponents last weekend. I enjoyed the system even if my Germans received the Stalingrad pocket making spanking they deserved. Seemed to flow well and we talked a lot about what strategies we'd use "next time."

The one thing I didn't particularly care for though was the attempt in the rules to come up with a new vocabulary for old concepts which I assume was to appeal to the mythical new to war gaming gamer. Offender… Continue

Diary of a Wargamer

Tiring to back at home, I always wanted to pull out something about wargames from the closet and read. It is hard for me to keep concentrated on the reading of indulgence as my wife keeps calling me for something.

I am now into the system of ASLSK, WW2 tactical level wargame beginning in the '80s. I was not rich enough to pay for the hundreds of dollars on Squad Leader and its numerous modules at that time. Thus I paid those some crappy 3W wargames in S&Ts. When the "bible" of… Continue

My kingdom for some plexi!

I need plexi. A lot of plexi.

A lot of plexi.

Now I've bought the usual piece of plexi from Lowes to cover a mapsheet or two.

But this is a 9 by 7 table. What would be great is two sheets - one 7 by 4, one 7 by 5.

Who's got a good idea ...?

Games Wanted

Please keep in mind that I'm officially lower-middle class (that's not low class for you jokesters out there) and work for a living.

With that said I'm looking for:

The Gamers This Hallowed Ground (unpunched non-smoking environment preferred)

SPI War of the Rings Flat Tray (punched is okay as long as it is great condition and guaranteed complete)

If you have these animals and you're willing to part with them, send me a note and we'll… Continue

A Game of DAK II

A few pictures from a game of DAK II we had a couple of months ago. Campaign game from January -42. Determined defense from the allied however stalled the Germans already west of Tobruk. With two Italian divisions annihilated in the desert south-east of El Mechili and Rommel stopped dead cold jusat east of El Chorma the allied got the chance to counterattack.

This was our first game of DAK II. I played the allied and enjoyed it alot but I am looking forward for a new game as the… Continue

What's my Special Purpose?

As anyone who has seen Avenue Q knows, having a Special Purpose is important in life. I know cuz the muppets said so. ;-) But what's mine? Well, I realized that the one thing I have that I can share with others on CSW is my love for making wargames. I don't mean designing them (which I'm not terribly good at), I mean making them...creating the physical product, right from one's living room.

That's why I embarked on the whole Ellison die-cutter oddessey almost two years… Continue

Historical Accuracy and Wargames - Some Thoughts

In the fall of 2000, I got into what I thought was an interesting discussion about the nebulous, never-to-be-solved discussion about what constitutes *accuracy* in a wargame. Because it was off topic on the CSW For the People page, I moved it to the “Coffee Table”, where it promptly died. However, I came across these notes while looking for something… anything… to add to this site. Enjoy!

My first blog...ever

Confession time: I've never had a blog.

I've had my own website for over ten years, but I've never blogged. In fact, I didn't realize until a few months ago that CSW had member blogs. I'm really that blog-unaware. In general, I think this come from not having much to say to the world at large. But I have found over the last few years that I actually have quite a bit to say to the wargaming community.

The question is, who is gonna read my rantings? Who is gonna… Continue

Inkscape Boardgames Extensions 0.7

Earlier today I noticed that my Inkscape Boardgame Extensions (as mentioned in my earlier blog posts here at consimworld) did not work at all with Inkscape 0.46 (currently only available as pre-release). The API for making extensions has been alomst completely rewritten since 0.45.1 that I were using. To fix this I did a major rewrite of the… Continue
