My gaming opportunities have been far and few between. Two months ago, my friend Joe and I got together for our only game session so far this year.
In light of today's 72nd Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion, this turned out to be oddly appropriate, since it was Scenario 1 from the Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit--The Retaking of Vierville.…

Last weekend, a few of us were in the mood for a "mead & pretzel" game and decided on playing Lord of the Rings Risk. I'm currently working on an AAR video, that I hope to upload in the next few days. In the meantime, I posted some comments about the game and our initial deployment on my… Continue

According to the infamous Wikipedia, Father's Day is celebrated in nearly 100 countries--including Iran. Although I think this year's homage to dear ol' dad was postponed (18 June 09).
Not every country celebrates Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday in June. So there's still time to plan that father-son expedition up Mount Everest! (Nepal--18 September 09).
In Bulgaria Father's Day falls on 26 December. Oh boy! Twice as many… Continue

Back in January, the Historical Miniature Gaming Society asked me to produce a movie for their upcoming Historicon-09 event (16-19 July).
Mayhem in Makassar Strait
is a 6-part series of a World War II Naval Miniatures action based on the Battle of Balikpapan (23-24 January 1942).
I posted Episode 1 was on YouTube yesterday:
While both Episodes 1 &… Continue

Hmmm. "Screwball Romantic Horror Soap Opera" sounds like it would have all the ingredients for a great role-playing game. If that is, it didn't mirror real life as depicted here in Vic Lee's daily comic, Pardon My Planet

Happy Easter everyone!
I can't imagine a better Easter movie for wargamers/history buffs than this one.

Age of Dreadnoughts
(AoD) is Mongoose Publications
latest release in their Victory at Sea
(VaS) series. The original VaS is a popular "beer and pretzels" set of rules covering World War II naval combat. This popularity is, in part, due to the coincidental release of Wizards of the Coast's (WotC) Axis and Allies: War at Sea in 2007. So in one fell-swoop naval miniature enthusiasts had a set of easy rules and pre-painted,… Continue

Need coffee to get you through the day?
Last week my sister Roxanne posted the following picture on her blog in honor of Caffeine Appreciation Month using her D&D miniatures.
Then my sister Erika "retaliated" by posting THIS picture on needcoffe.com using her daughter's Star Wars action figures:…

Having amassed a collection of Starfleet Battles
(SFB) games and supplements, I SWORE I wasn't going to invest in Amarillo Design Bureau's (ABD's) Federation Commander
That is, until someone on The Miniatures Page
(TMP) offered a great deal for slightly-used copies of both Federation Commander: Klingon Border
and Federation Commander Romulan Border
. After reading the favorable reviews on TMP, I… Continue

In the US, today is Medal of Honor Day--a poignant reminder that some of the miniatures and playing pieces in our hobby represent heroes who "served above and beyond the call of duty."
A friend of mine sent me this link from Stars and Stripes
Two years ago, Bruce Crandall, a veteran here in western Washington State, finally received… Continue

On March 5, 1946 Winston Churchill gave his famous "Iron Curtain" Speech at Westminster College in Fulton Missouri. The speech opened the eyes of many to the realities of the fate of Eastern Europe and the true nature of the USSR.
A generation later, President Ronald Reagan was criticized for calling the Soviet Union "an Evil Empire;" while President Bush was ridiculed by many for calling Iran, Iraq and North Korea an "Axis of… Continue
