I have some news for Line of Departure subscribers especially. Unfortunately it's not good. Today I got a bad diagnosis at a doctor's office, and my driving will be curtailed for the foreseeable future. No, it's not a DUI, nor is it connected with substance abuse. It's my heart, and it's been malfunctioning in a frightening manner. I have to get on the schedule with my invasive cardiologist, yes that's a thing, to get a pacemaker, as soon as possible.

As a result, I will not be driving as I was, and not visiting the Line of Departure Post Office box as regularly as I have since I started in 1991. I will be working on Issue 83 though, especially as I have extra time that I was spending driving, and going to the gym (that's off limits too for the time being).

So if you're a subscriber and would like to renew, or someone interested in starting a new subscription, please use the Line of Departure PayPal page. I'll get your order a lot sooner than I will if you send it to the PO box, and I make a rare trip there.

Glad to hear that Jim! Take care!

I went to the cardiologist this afternoon, and everything looks good.  I was cleared to drive six days ago by the surgeon, and right now the only real restriction is that I can't lift weights for three to four months.  The cardiologist even said that I looked healthier today -- I've been hearing that a lot over the last month, often preceded by comments about unhealthy I looked before the pacemaker.

Jim, I've very happy and relieved to hear that the procedure went well and the pacemaker is helping. Wishing you all the best!

Here is what I just posted to Facebook:

Health and publishing update!

Things seem to be going well with the new pacemaker. The incision is healing nicely and, more importantly, I haven't done a pace plant into the carpet or the express lane at Giant Eagle since the procedure. In fact I think I'm feeling better than I have in a long while.

I am back to my day jobs, and have been since the day after I got home from the hospital. I think I pushed myself a little too hard though, and wound up tired and napping on a few afternoons. Still, I'd rather push just a little too much than sit around whining. There is an old Irish saying from my grandma's family, stating that someone "enjoys ill health." Well, that's not me.

I'm also back at the helm of Line of Departure, working on Issue 83. The lead review looks as though it's going to be The Day of Waterloo (TPS), followed by one on WW2 (Canvas Temple).

Stay tuned for details.

I just saw my surgeon this afternoon, and everything is coming along nicely.  The pacemaker and the loop recorder, which he implanted in my chest last year, are recording no irregularities.  So far so good.

Thanks Wayne.  I'm actually doing better now, and will be seeing the surgeon for my follow up on Thursday.

The funny thing is that before this procedure, I really, really wanted it, to get this old problem fixed once and for all.  Then afterward, I started hearing from people who said that I looked and sounded a lot better.  Some noticed how sick I appeared over the last couple of years.  Hopefully now I'll keep on hearing that I'm visibly healthier.

So I have no regrets, except that I couldn't have gotten my pacemaker years ago.

Sending you positive thoughts. Get better.

Well, I'm back, and the procedure was a success.  I might die, but it won't from having my heart stop on its own, not any time soon!

I'm going into the hospital tomorrow for my pacemaker.  Hopefully in a month my heart condition will just be an unpleasant memory.
