FRANKFURT--The early morning sky over German was blotted out today over Augsburg and Munchen by thousands of Soviet parachutes as at least nine combat brigades were dropped around those cities on West Germany's southern frontier.
The airborne assault was cordinated with Soviet attacks around Nurnberg. The American defenders guarding the city have been stubborn, but there are scattered reports of Soviet chemical attacks punching small holes in the NATO lines.
Though the Soviet effort has been less concentrated in the north, a breakthrough of some concern was scored by the Warsaw Pact near Hannover. Soviet divisions quickly massed in a tiny gap and looked to exploit.
NATO reinforcements are reportedly racing to the scene.
