I just finished reading this earlier in the week. It looks at US Generals views on the conflict in Vietnam. It was written by a General who served there. He sent a questionnaire to all the generals that served in the conflict, and then organized all the data and this book was the result.

It is a very interesting read, and gives a lot of insight into the problems of the conflict.

Dereliction of Duty has been added to my list. Thanks Colonel. I need to find more time to read.

Anyone read Striving for Air Superiority: The Tactical Air Command in Vietnam by Craig Hannah? Saw this when looking up General McMasters on amazon. This led to finding Debrief: A Complete History of U.S. Aerial Engagements - 1981 to the Present by Craig Brown, which sounds like an interesting book.

For a different view on the problems, read Richard Gabriel's CRISIS IN COMMAND to see what the more junior officers had to say. Based on data collected in an official Army "command climate" survey initiated by then Commander MACV, General William Westmoreland. The results were so disturbing that the report was restricted.

Still, all this is far too American-centric. The best antidote for that is Eric Bergerud's THE DYNAMICS OF DEFEAT, which will give you pause as it tends to show how irrelevant (at best) and how harmful (at worst) the U.S. effort was where it mattered--the South Vietnamese countryside.
