January - Our second play of Warriors of God. We played the 100 Years War scenario. We were over halfway through it when we realized that we had the leader movement rules all wrong! Leaders can only cross a single border from a singe area each action impulse! We had been moving anybody and evrybody each impulse. Needless to say, we stopped the current game and will re-start next week. Also our first play of Lion in Winter (last week) was all wrong. How embarrassing for a couple of old hands to have almost played two whole games with a major rules mistake. If we had read the rules a little closer we should have caught it. Oh well, "once more unto the breach, dear friends."

After 16 turns of Alte Veste (Gustav Adolf the Great - GMT) the Swedish player decided (yesterday) he'd had enough beating his head against the Imperial fortifications and terrible terrain. Great infantry fight but a tough situation for the Swedes. He did get some revenge in a quick follow-up game of Trenches of Valor winning by one point in the last turn. This VPG title is quick, easy to learn and a lot of fun!

Played two (long) turns of SPQR Heracula helping a fellow new at the game system. He had the 3rd edition but hadn't tried it yet. I tried to give him a good "learning mode" session.

Last week visiting my nephews at grandma's. Played Monstercololyps (miniatures, kind of complicated), War on Terror (a close one, went to the last hand), Queen's Gambit (Star Wars - my 16-year-old nephew & his brother as the Trade Federation beat me & my son as the Republic - again!) and Age of Mythology (Greeks beat the Egyptians - this time the 16-year-old and my son on the winning side).

Honingfeld ends up with a Swedish marginal victory 218 - 196 compared to the historical 60 - 210 decisive Polish historical victory. Even though Gustav II Adolf was badly wounded in this one.

Started Honingfelde 1629 another Swedish-Polish cavalry battle in the Gustav Adolf the Great edition of GMT's Musket & Pike Battle System. Both the Polish and Swedish (actually German) left wings are shattered after 6 turns, reinforcements now showing up will decide the battle.

Finished Dirschau with GIIA claiming a decisive Swedish victory. The surprise charge by Wrangel on the left plus the damage done to the Poles on the right did the job. We also tried Lightning War on Terror from DG which Joe won as a doorprise at Monstercon. You can learn the rules in about 10 minutes and 2 - 4 people can play this rather simple card game. The surprise was that nobody plays the "bad guys". The players compete to "liberate" the most points worth of "hostile regimes" - like Iran, North Korea, Columbia, Saudi Arabia (?), etc.

Started the Battle of Dirschau 1627 Gustav Adolf - With God and Victorious Arms (GMT). The Swedish right wing under Thurn charged the Polish left, but the superior Polish morale and lancers handled them roughly. Polish reinforcements are coming with the center under Potecki. Polish right wing cav moved up in Column formation to make it through the dunes, but the Swedish left (mostly German Ryttares and Kyrassairs) charged before they were able to deploy for battle. Looks like most of the Polish left will be wiped out.

In a lighter note, I was able to defeat my son in 1960:The Making of the President. Landslide for Nixon, over 380 electoral votes (sigh).

Finished up our first play of USAAF. The US pretty much acheived victory by September 1944. For the reasons listed on March 29, I thought it was a cool game. The German player went into almost full jet production, but the US was drew a number of target groups that he was able to knock out and rolled pretty good on the "shorten the war" table. Now I have room on my gaming table for Panzerblitz 2: Hill of Death!
