How I met a wargamer in Split, Croatia and the postive aspects of it all

1995, East Carolina University:

One day, while a Student at ECU, I need to use a PC to write an English Paper, but I found all the Windows machines were used up, mostly by Netscape users (it was 1995, and the Web was shiny new).

So, I walked into the Vax/VMS dumb terminal room to fire up Vi to write my paper and then I would Z-Modem it later into Word.

I needed to do a little research, so Vax/VMS was just fine for using Gopherspace and I would use Lynx - the text based Web browser.

(My English paper was a process paper, so I would use this session as that paper. A truly inspirational day.) I would also find out they did not have Z-Modem, just Kermit. I would later than day run in to a Comp Sci gal I knew then and we would install Z and Y modem and a NNTP browser/service on my space there, after I got a huge quota increase.

While goofing off, I decided to use the VMS chat client to check out any traffic in the .hr domain. The reason Croatia was on my mind was I had just finished building my first model in years - a BF 109G-14 in Croation Markings.

Found this guy chatting, asked him if he did flight sims and wargames, and soon we were exchanging emails and turns for Operation Crusader and Steel Panthers.

Not long after that I found out about the ICCP - (International Camp Counselours Program) with the YMCA, who I worked for in the summer time in those days as a carpenter, and JA was the food service director for Camp Seagull/Seafarer near Minisotte Beach, NC.

So, we hooked Ciril up and got him free flights, room, board and a job for two summers teaching the youth of America how to use a sail boat.

Ciril Rozic may be known to some of you - he wrote quite a few reviews for in previous years.

Today, Ciril is an Electrical Engineering Grad Student at the University of Hawaii and teaches Introductory Oceanography and a Lab as his TA duties.

I have not seen the guy in years (except on Skype and Google Chat), but this Holiday Season he is coming over for a two week stay, and we will be able to push some counters and bits around while he is here.
