This one's been hell on me so far.

The rules are presented in such a different format from what I've seen,

and though they seem complete (maybe?) are pared down to a minimum of

repetition (usually a good thing). But, without extensive cross referencing

(nor even an index) it's very difficult to find out what links with what -

and the format makes them just not stick in my head, in terms of where

to bother looking.

Anyhow, I've been forced to play the introductory scenarios - and don't feel like

I'm 'getting it'. The first, Case White, two playings I couldn't crack Poland in

the single turn. Then in Barbarossa, there are Russian armies parked, unable

to do anything, behind German lines - but it doesn't appear that they're going

to starve - and they're too tough for the Germans to do more than screen. Ah,

and I used up all my air power on one turn - so the stuff doesn't recycle.

Got my start in. The campaign game certainly eases things along -

making big decisions without having to really understand the full system.

Still, I'm worried when the bullets fly, I'll have trouble with the system.

Whole thang. And yes.

Though, I AM going to tap one last resource - looked at the old TK rules,

and though I don't like the format, they do actually seem to explain the purpose

of why you're placing chits. Might help grasp, so this'll be my reading material as

I push forward.

Ok, the hell with it.

I'm setting up the campaign, and see if I screw it up completely.

Just can't fart around with learning scenarios.

Sick for a while, but looking over yesterday's (day before?) Jap attacks, I really don't

have a feel for how to manage naval invasions. Everything else seems to make sense,

but I couldn't bring enough to bear to take the Philippians. Probably focused too much

on China.

I'll say this much, the design team is very responsive to requests for clarification,

and active both on CSW and BGG. I just prefer fighting my way through the rules

(why?).

THAT sounds more like A3R. :D

That's probably just a card.

Ok, more pain. This time it was the 'Surprise Attack' table for Pearl Harbor

(maybe more?). Referenced on one of the options (playing cards) without any

rule # to help find. Took 20 mins to finally see it on a player aid - now I know -

but damn, they didn't even look like a set of random charts.

This game is just not designed for someone to pick up and play.

WiF was infinitely easier to learn.

No. They're pretty much the same rules. THAT'S a very elegant feature.

The big differences are in the card options/political rules, which I've largely not had

to worry about. When I unleash the whole thing, there will be chaos (akin to the first

time I tried La Grande Guerre), but it should be interesting, to say the least.

Next step in this little investigation - spent the last couple days prepping to do the Tora Tora Tora! scenario

(the big jap push - pearl harbor et al). Took me hours to figure out not just how, but even IF I could invade a

hex more than one hex away. There's only one little line (and no example) that mentions this.

Really tough to get a grasp on the rules, when such key things are so hidden.

And it's funny - for all the sparseness, I don't feel that they've managed to be terribly efficient.
