The Strategic Review by Dumb and Dumber (David Cameron and Nick Clegg)

The Strategic Review has been done by these 2 muppets, and it is more like a cost cutting exercise.
The 2 most ridiculous plans they have made is to scrap the Harrier and to cancel the new Nimrod spyplane immediately.
There are some things they plan which are understandable, but the Harrier and Nimrod - they must have had their heads up each others arses when they came up with that idea!

500,000 government workers go from council workers to judges - anyone who is not privately employed. I do think under the Labour government (Blair & Brown) a lot of unnecessary posts, positions and departments were started up, known as Quangos, and thankfully many of these are getting the chop.

Jim is correct Brian - MOD is Ministry of Defence.
As for the social programs, it is good they are getting to grips with a lot of the overspend in the public sector, which means making a lot of the government departments far leaner in the manpower department.
But I do think they have make some bad choices in some areas, especially cutting troops and equipment, as this in turn filters down into the private sector.
For example - RAG Kinloss is an RAF base in Scotland, which will close because of the cancellation of the new Nimrod. Just imagine the impact on the local community where so many civvies depend on the base being there.

This sounds a lot like the American system, in which cost overruns and inefficiency are veritable institutions.

One thing that does impress me is that Britain is starting to ask some hard questions of its social programs. I'm struck too by the purported goal of eliminating the national debt. If the government is truly serious about that, it can yield some massive economic benefits.

If they really want to start saving money, they should seriously look into how the MOD does it's procurements and hands out the contracts. I have lost count the amount of projects which have run way over budget and way past their delivery dates - so much so that when the equipment does arrive, it is so late it is out of date and needs more money thrown at it to bring it up to date!
There is a lot of money being wasted at Whitehall and employs far too many people.

Yes - it sounds dumb! - the only logic I can see in it is if they think the new carriers will be carrying the new US combined strike fighter, which should be operational by then. They may also be planning to buy a US Nimrod equivalent. This would be logical as we would save on R+D and put off the expense of purchase for several years.
I wonder if the 'Muppets' have any real plan for a combined reactive defence of the UK?
My personal feeling is they are simply trying to get an equality of dissatisfaction among the armed forces. They are probably only interested in trying to keep themselves in power by appearing (as they think) - 'fair'.

We did the same in the 30s after the depression and reaped the rewards in France etc a few years later.
