That little SPI folio WORLD WAR ONE was a blast to play--fast and fun. The Eastern Front was particularly interesting to play in that game.

I too am happy that World War I is getting so much press in game publishing now--it was long a favorite period for me. I whiled my way for hours with the old 1914, RICHTHOFEN'S WAR, and JUTLAND, and thought I had found wargaming nirvana with SPI's old SOLDIERS, 1918, and the MARNE (to say nothing of DREADNOUGHT). Also played RAND's old CAMBRAI and Jim Bumpas's SCHUTZTRUPPE games a lot of times. Of the "newer" SPI WWI games, my favorite was (of course) TO THE GREEN FIELDS BEYOND--the S&T TANNENBERG was good, the GREAT WAR IN THE EAST QUAD was less successful than these, and THE KAISER'S BATTLE just didn't do it for me.

Never got the WAR IN EUROPE WORLD WAR ONE module and Avalon Hill's GUNS OF AUGUST just never grabbed me, much as I wanted to love that game. Had both editions of the venerable old VERDUN by Conflict but these were just so-so for me as well. S&T's SIDESHOW was a beautifully produced disaster of game, sadly, when that came out. And I remember finding an old copy of KAISERSCHLACHT and playing that a couple times. My favorite game for years, however, was People's Wargames' THE COSSACKS ARE COMING. Phenomenal.

Now we have so many of these games and I want to play them all!

Don't forget Distant Foriegn Fields - a contender pretending to be a sleeper....Of course the folio SPI game is lovely....

Come to think of it ... my brother and I played Tannenberg several times back when it came out in the 70's - I was probably 14 years old, my brother twelve. I even remember sending a hand-written rules question with a stamped self-addressed return envelope (no mean feat at the time as we're in Canada and I had to ask the post office people how to get that to work from the States !) and also remember agonizing over how to best frame the question in a yes/no format !! Remember that ?? Well, SPI answered, it was quite the thrill ;-)

I've got a bunch of World War I games, starting with the first in my collection, 1914 (Avalon Hill). I still have it after thirty-seven years, though now it's so worn that a couple of years ago I bought a good-quality replacement on eBay. Why? Because despite some flaws, it remains a favorite.

Richtofen's War
(Avalon Hill) was another very early purchase and it's still fun, and supported in Line of Departure. Other major favorites: Tannenburg (S&T/SPI), Jutland (Avalon Hill), the entire Great War at Sea Series (Avalanche Press), Landships (Clash of Arms) and Sideshow (S&T/3W).

Death in the Trenches is a fun tense game! Combat is never a sure thing and the events are cool. The alternating pulse movement can get really intense. I like this game a lot.
